Paths for everyone volunteering (Morecambe Bay Stall and M Check Trail Event)
As part of the Get Cycling Morecambe Bay series of free cycling events to celebrate the launch Ways Around The Bay, we are teaming up with the Morecambe Bay Partnership and Everybody's Cycling to run a stall and interactive trail on the promenade in Morecambe on:
Saturday 1st July from 9am-4pm (stall and trail will be active for approximately 4 hours on the day: 10am-12 noon and again 1pm-3pm).
The event and trail/stall we are running will take place on the promenade opposite the Winter Gardens in Morecambe.
Further details on the free community cycling events can be found on www.waysaroundthebay.org.uk/enjoy-your-visit/get-cycling-morecambe-bay
The stall and trail is being organised by Sustrans' regional Volunteer Coordinator, but we would welcome volunteers, to chat to people about local cycling and walking routes and volunteering.
The M Check Trail needs between 5-10 volunteers to run it, with some basic knowledge of how to look after/check a bike e.g. pump up tyres, tighten allen key nuts and apply oil etc.
The M Check Trail (see attached document) is a series of 12 signs taking trail participants through a check of their bike's safety and condition, prior to a bike ride. Ideally we'd have a volunteer at each of the 12 stations, however it's probably only essential at 6 of the stations, where we may have a bike pump for them to use or some oil for a stiff chain, for example.
If you aren't sure what an 'M' Check is, please see the Sustrans website for a useful video: https://www.sustrans.org.uk/our-blog/get-active/2019/everyday-walking-and-cycling/the-m-check-for-your-bike-in-11-steps
Sustrans will brief all volunteers in advance of the event, and risk assess the activity, as well as covering lunch and local travel costs (on sustainable transport) for all volunteers who help out on the day.
Further opportunities to volunteer with Sustrans After this event, there is time and opportunity to volunteer with Sustrans on the National Cycle Network.
Our Paths for everyone volunteering tasks and activities are varied and done on the National Cycle Network near you. You can help keep your part of the Network looking great and be as accessible as possible.
You can do any of the activities and tasks below, as according to your own interests. This includes:
- cutting back plants that are overhanging the paths
- picking up litter from the area or sweep back broken glass to keep the path accessible and help wildlife
- making sure the Network route signs look right and can be read, including sometimes removing graffiti
- letting the relevant local responsible authority know if there are any major issues, faults or things that need repairing.
You can do these tasks on your own, with your family or a few other volunteers, as you like. Equipment for the activities above will be provided, if needed.
We know that volunteering on the National Cycle Network can look different depending on where you are. Let us know if you would like to discuss the needs of your community near the Network.
Does this sound like you?
You…
- enjoy being active and doing practical tasks
- can easily reach the part of the National Cycle Network that you would like to help on by walking, cycling, wheeling or public transport
- would like to get outdoors more
- can carry out tasks independently
- share our values and mission to get more people cycling, walking and wheeling.
Then let us know your interest in helping care for your local paths on the National Cycle Network in your area.
Time commitment
We are flexible on how much time you can help each week or month.
