Active schools volunteering (Derby)
We do many different school activities and events to encourage and inspire children and young people to be more active. You will support your local team in running these fun, outdoor activities at a school in your area. You can help with:
- supporting at sessions that help children cycling without stabilisers
- arranging different activities, such as ‘Bling your bike’ sessions
- creating and handing out promotional materials
- raising awareness (share materials, at event, speeches etc)
- organising, doing or assisting cycle rides, walks or wheeling in your local area
- doing cycle repairs and other maintenance tasks
- running or supporting an after-school cycle club
- assisting with entering data online from school travel surveys, when needed.
And much more! Activities can vary between schools, so the above can differ depending on where you will help. Let us know what activities you would like to support.
Please don’t hesitate to let us know if you already have experience with leading cycle rides, teaching, doing cycle maintenance etc.
We will provide you training and support during your time volunteering. You will learn how to engage children and young people with the activities and make sure they are done safely.
Does this sound like you?
You…
- enjoy being active and would like to support practical outdoor activities and events with children and young people
- are happy to work alongside our local team
- would enjoy being a source of support and motivation for children and young people to engage with their active travel opportunities
- live nearby the school(s), so you can cycle, wheel or travel on foot to the events
- would be interested in learning new skills to engage in cycle and / or walking activities
- like to engage with a diverse group of children and young people
- share our values and mission to get more people cycling, walking and wheeling in your community.
Then let us know your interest in helping with our active schools activities in your area.
Time commitment
We are flexible on when you can help each week or month. We do activities during the school term in the morning, afternoon or after school (until 5:30pm). This is on weekdays only. It would be great if you can help with at least 1-2 activities per school term. Let us know what suits you.

Safeguarding
We might do a disclosure check (enhanced) for these activities, as you are volunteering with children and youth under 18. If needed, you will be able to attend some supervised activities before this comes through. We will do this check on your behalf, so you only need to provide a few details. We won’t do this check until after we have had our first chat together about the activities.
You can read our Safeguarding statement here. This sets out our commitment to keep people safe from harm.
