Community area leader (Derby City)

Opportunity image

People in your community come together regularly as a group to help with different tasks and activities. They want to help more people walk, wheel and cycle in your area. You will be a central connection between the group and your local Sustrans team.

You will help:

  • welcome new volunteers and get them started
  • plan different activities (with the group’s support and that of your local Sustrans team)
  • give tasks to people in the group
  • organise meetings and social gatherings
  • make us aware of any new local volunteering engagement opportunities, when possible
  • record the group’s activities in our system and let us know how it is going.

We welcome people with a wide range of skills. Above all, we are looking for enthusiasm and commitment.

You will receive all necessary training and support. Other training can be requested for your further development and learning.

Not sure if you are ready to be the main contact person for your local group? Why not join their activities first and get a feeling for what they do. Just let us know your interest.

Does this sound like you?

You…

  • are happy to be a source of support and motivation to people
  • enjoy organising and planning group activities
  • can carry out tasks independently and with a diverse group of people
  • feel comfortable with facilitating group meetings
  • would like to develop your abilities to guide people and coordinate groups
  • are happy to work with your local Sustrans team to deliver activities
  • share our values and mission to get more people cycling, walking and wheeling in your local area.

Then let us know your interest in helping us support a local group of volunteers in your community.

Time commitment

You will meet with your group (online or in-person) once a month. Then usually, you will spend 3 to 6 days a year supporting group activities. This can be group task sessions, promoting Sustrans’ work locally, cycle rides, walks and alike.

We are flexible on when you can help during the week. Let us know what suits you.

Volunteering for everyone with Sustrans

We are committed to representing the diverse communities we work with, and we welcome people from all backgrounds to volunteer with us. We commit to equity and an inclusive culture, so volunteering is for everyone.

We believe that a diverse and inclusive organisation brings with it a diversity of ideas and ways of working, which strengthens everything we do.

Please have a look at the website above and our Volunteering agreement before you join. Then you know what we all expect from each other when volunteering.

Your accessibility

Please let us know in the application form, if you need any support or adjustments to make our first chat together and volunteering a positive experience for you.

If you don’t have an email address, or for any other reason aren’t able to fill in our online form, not to worry. Reach out to your local Volunteer Coordinator (find here), and they can fill in the details for you.

**We will ask you for the contact details of a person, who you have known for more than 6 months (1 reference). ** Please have these ready when filling in the application form. If you need support identifying a reference, please let us know.
