Wildlife volunteering (30 Days Wild on the National Cycle Network)
We help look after miles of National Cycle Network paths and parts of the surrounding areas. We think these are ideal places to create habitats for local wildlife. This would help improve local environments and create green spaces for more people to enjoy.
You can do different tasks and help with activities according to your own interests, including:
- wildlife and nature monitoring, using iRecord on the National Cycle Network in your local area
- taking part in national wildlife recording campaigns, such as RSPB Birdwatch, BeeWalk, Big Butterfly Count and alike during the year
- picking up litter from the area or sweep back broken glass to help wildlife and keep their habitats clean
- building small natural shelters for insects, like a bug hotel
- using your creative skills and write a poem or story inspired by your local green areas of the Network
- investigating (local) nature folklore to share
- helping at practical habitat management task sessions, if available.
You do not need to be a wildlife or biodiversity expert to take part in these activities.
Training to use iRecord and other wildlife guidance will be provided. On occasion, you might be able to attend a training session with our ecologist or delivered by a partner organisation, if available.
We can also support you to achieve your John Muir Award.
Does this sound like you?
You…
- enjoy being active and doing practical tasks outdoors
- are interested in green, wild spaces and wildlife
- enjoy paying attention to the details
- live near a part of the National Cycle Network that you would like to be engaged with wildlife and nature activities
- can carry out tasks independently
- share our values and mission to get more people cycling, walking and wheeling in your community.
Then let us know your interest in helping look after green spaces and its wildlife where you live.
