Action Team volunteering (Scotland)
Sustrans makes it easier for everyone to walk, wheel and cycle. We want you, people from local communities, to be part of and influence this journey.
But we recognise that lives are busy and commitments change.
The Action Team is a way for people who are interested in volunteering to stay in touch without needing to volunteer all the time.
In the Action Team, we will let you know when there is a volunteering task or opportunity you can do. You choose what to take on, based on your availability and interests. Each activity will be different, and you can do as few or as many as you like.
Think of it like choosing from a volunteering buffet.
Some things will be connected to the National Cycle Network, some to our wider work. Some will be local, some Scotland-wide, some UK-wide.
We will call you to have an initial chat to tell you more about the Action Team and find out why you want to volunteer.
Then, with support from your local Sustrans team, you will:
- join our online Action Team community in Assemble
- hear about volunteering opportunities, tasks and events throughout the year
- take up different activities in your area or online
- learn about how we support individuals and community groups to volunteer
- let us know about your experience of volunteering.
In between any activities you do, you can have a look at our ‘Looking after a National Cycle Network route’ guide for ideas of small actions that you can take easily to improve your local paths. You can tell us what you do through our volunteer platform, Assemble.
Does this sound like you?
You…
- can easily reach the National Cycle Network by walking, cycling, wheeling or public transport
- are able to pick up tasks and messages online
- might enjoy being active outdoors and/or doing online activities
- can do tasks independently
- share our values and mission to get more people cycling, walking and wheeling
- are enthusiastic about sustainable travel in your area
Time commitment
You can choose which tasks and opportunities to do. It is fully flexible - you decide how much time you spend volunteering each month.
Volunteering for everyone with Sustrans
We are committed to representing the diverse communities we work with, and we welcome people from all backgrounds to volunteer with us. We commit to equity and an inclusive culture, so volunteering is for everyone.
We believe that a diverse and inclusive organisation brings with it a diversity of ideas and ways of working, which strengthens everything we do.
Please have a look at the website above and our Volunteering agreement before you join. Then you know what we all expect from each other when volunteering.
Your accessibility
Please let us know in the application form, if you need any support or adjustments to make our first chat together and volunteering a positive experience for you.
Any expenses for helping with these activities, which have been agreed, will be paid back to you. This can include for tools and public transport on the day of volunteering.
If you don’t have an email address, or for any other reason aren’t able to fill in our online form, not to worry. Reach out to your local Volunteer Coordinator (find here), and they can signpost you to other opportunities.
