Community project volunteering - Somer Valley (Active Steps)

Opportunity image

We’re delivering an Active Steps programme in the Somer Valley. This free, 10-week health and wellbeing programme aims to gradually increase physical activity by encouraging and helping people to walk and/or cycle for more everyday journeys.

These will be run from hubs across the area:

- Radstock - Paulton - Midsomer Norton - Westfield

You can help people to experience the benefits of healthier and sustainable travel choices in a supportive and social environment.

When you support walking and wheeling activities, you will:

  • Support weekly led walks and rides by assisting the walk or ride manager.
  • Promote and raise awareness of the programme,
  • Engage with local groups
  • Support the recruitment of referrals into the programme.
  • Helping to run stalls and engagement at local events.

You will get training and support to assist with these activities. All our walking or wheeling activities will be short routes in easy to reach locations.

Does this sound like you?

You…

  • enjoy being active outdoors
  • can carry out tasks to support the project Officer and comfortable volunteering with a diverse group of people
  • are happy to support and motivate people to walk or wheel on their everyday journeys
  • share our values and mission to get more people cycling, walking and wheeling in your local area.

It's possible to support either walks, rides or both. If you want to support the led rides you will need to be a competent cyclist.

Then let us know your interest in assisting local community walking and wheeling sessions in your area.

Time commitment

We will be running 2+ sessions per week. We are flexible on how much time you can help but we would like you to commit to supporting at least 2 walking or wheeling sessions a month.

Volunteering for everyone with Sustrans

We are committed to representing the diverse communities we work with, and we welcome people from all backgrounds to volunteer with us. We commit to equity and an inclusive culture, so volunteering is for everyone.

We believe that a diverse and inclusive organisation brings with it a diversity of ideas and ways of working, which strengthens everything we do.

Please have a look at the website above and our Volunteering agreement before you join. Then you know what we all expect from each other when volunteering.

Your accessibility

Please let us know in the application form, if you need any support or adjustments to make our first chat together and volunteering a positive experience for you.

Any expenses for helping with these activities, which have been agreed, will be paid back to you. This can include for tools and public transport on the day of volunteering.

If you don’t have an email address, or for any other reason aren’t able to fill in our online form, not to worry. Reach out to your local Volunteer Coordinator (find here), and they can fill in the details for you.

Safeguarding

For these volunteering activities, we will usually not do a disclosure check before you start. However, this might change if you will be engaged with children or adults at risk. You can read our Safeguarding statement here. This sets out our commitment to keep people safe from harm.
