Active community volunteering - Cycling (Redcar and Cleveland)

Opportunity image

Cycling with groups in your community is a great way to get more people active. We would like more people to know the freedom that cycling can bring. As well as the added health and wellbeing benefits of being active on everyday journeys.

You can be part of your local active community cycling activities. These can include:

  • helping with practical tasks at cycling group rides in your area
  • assisting at cycling rides by being in the back of the group. This is to make sure no one is left behind
  • supporting people in the group with any mechanical issues of their cycle.

We make sure that any cycle rides in your area are organised to suit the ability of the group joining. We do not run rides in extremely remote locations or on challenging trails.

In order to help with group cycle rides, you will need to join as a participant first. This will help with your understanding of how a group ride works. It is also a great way to try out these activities before volunteering.

Does this sound like you?

You…

  • enjoy cycling and being active outdoors
  • can do tasks independently and with a diverse group of people
  • are happy to support and motivate others to become confident in cycling
  • have already taken part in a few group cycle rides as a participant
  • share our values and mission to get more people cycling, walking and wheeling in your local area.

Then let us know your interest in helping a small local team with group cycle rides in your area.

Time commitment

We are flexible on how much time you can help each week or month. Let us know what suits you. Usually, people assist with at least 3 rides a year.

Volunteering for everyone with Sustrans

We are committed to representing the diverse communities we work with, and we welcome people from all backgrounds to volunteer with us. We commit to equity and an inclusive culture, so volunteering is for everyone.

We believe that a diverse and inclusive organisation brings with it a diversity of ideas and ways of working, which strengthens everything we do.

Please have a look at the website above and our Volunteering agreement before you join. Then you know what we all expect from each other when volunteering.

Your accessibility

Please let us know in the application form, if you need any support or adjustments to make our first chat together and volunteering a positive experience for you.

Any expenses for helping with these activities, which have been agreed, will be paid back to you. This can include for tools and public transport on the day of volunteering.

If you don’t have an email address, or for any other reason aren’t able to fill in our online form, not to worry. Reach out to your local Volunteer Coordinator (find here), and they can fill in the details for you.

Safeguarding

For these volunteering activities, we will usually not do a disclosure check before you start. However, this might change if you will be engaged with children or adults at risk. You can read our Safeguarding statement here. This sets out our commitment to keep people safe from harm.
